Dapoxetine hydrochloride belongs to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) family. (4) Previously serving as an effective anti-depressant, the research highlights Dapoxetine’s role in promoting ejaculatory delay. The Central Nervous System controls human ejaculation. Dapoxetine inhibits the serotonin transporter and improves its action at the pre and postsynaptic receptors, causing a delay in ejaculation. (4) Delayed ejaculation eventually leads to increased sexual confidence and satisfaction in the males. Dapoxetine is a medication that treats premature ejaculation, should be preferably administered in the age group of 18-64 years.
Role played by Serotonin
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter responsible for sending signals from one nerve cell to another. It is often also considered a critical hormone that balances our emotions, appetite, digestion, and primarily our mood, happiness, and well-being. It also regulates our body clock and sleep cycles. The presence of serotonin mainly in the brain, blood platelets and bowels justifies this fact (1). The chemical name of serotonin is 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT). It is a primary amino compound synthesized from the L-Tryptophan Amino Acid. (2)
Serotonin and PE
Stress may develop due to perpetual change and coping, work-life imbalance, organizational focus, and other factors in present-day life. Emotional or mental strain in life can affect PE and sexual dysfunction. Serotonin can signal the nervous system to elevate the state of anxiety in the body leading to the weakening of the ejaculation reflex. It may lead to frustration and distress; and may even affect a man’s self-esteem, self-confidence and thus his interpersonal relationships. Eventually, increased impotence may be the extreme consequence.
Precautions
Dapoxetine tablet should be taken 1-3 hours before its actual effect to counteract PE. (3) People with heart disorders, depression, glaucoma, the tendency towards any allergic reactions, kidney or liver conditions or epilepsy; should avoid usage of the medicine. Only one tablet per day is advised and swallowed whole with a glass of water. Common side effects may be feeling dizzy, nauseous or getting headaches. Dapoxetine should be taken under medical prescription only. (3)
Dapoxetine, marketed as Priligy, is sold at the pharmacy under Dapox, Duralast, Dasutra, Kutub, Prejac and others.
Healthy Guidelines
It is imperative to eat a well-balanced diet to enjoy a full and happy life. Foods that contain nitric oxide, arginine- a precursor of nitric oxide or improve the blood flow; support the function of the Dapoxetine drug. Watermelon, Coffee, Dark Chocolate, Spinach and green leafy vegetables, Nuts as pistachios, walnuts, almonds and others, oranges and blueberries and spicy hot foods all support blood flow. These foods will also improve the body blood circulatory system and contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
Apart from drug therapy and surgery, preliminary treatments may be beneficial. Counselling, behavioural techniques, psychotherapy and adopting a stress-free attitude consciously. Reducing stress is critical to enjoying a fulfilled and happy life, laced with self-confidence and self-esteem. Patients with PE need to improve their quality of life.
